Scotland just made history.

Scotland has become the first country in the world to make period products freely available to all who need them after final approval was given to a landmark piece of legislation in Parliament on Tuesday.

The measure makes tampons and sanitary pads available at designated public places such as community centers, youth clubs, and pharmacies, at an estimated annual cost to taxpayers of 24 million pounds ($32 million U.S.).

The Scottish Parliament voted unanimously in favor of the Period Products bill on Tuesday, months after lawmakers had initially signaled their support.

It means period products will be available to access in public buildings including schools and universities across Scotland.

According to the new rules, it will be up to local authorities and education providers to ensure the products are available free of charge.

One in 10 girls in the United Kingdom have been unable to afford period products, according to a 2017 survey from Plan International UK.

The survey also found that nearly half of all girls aged 14 to 21 are embarrassed by their periods, while about half had missed an entire day of school because of them.

Scotland’s move follows a string of recent attempts to tackle period poverty in the country.

In 2018, the government announced that students in schools, colleges, and universities across the countries would be able to access sanitary products for free, through a ÂŁ5.2 million investment.

In 2019, it allocated another ÂŁ4 million to make period products available for free in libraries and recreational centers.

Nicola Sturgeon, Scotland’s first minister, posted on Twitter shortly after the vote on Tuesday evening that she was “proud to vote for this groundbreaking legislation” which she called an “important policy for women and girls.”

Two years ago, Scotland also made history when it began providing free sanitary products to students at schools, colleges, and universities through a government program.

Wales and England followed last year with similar programs that provide free sanitary products in schools.

Why walking is so important.

Walking can help you lose weight
Walking 1 hour each day can help you burn calories and, in turn, lose weight.

In one study, 11 moderate-weight women lost an average of 17 pounds (7.7 kg), or 10% of their initial body weight, after 6 months of brisk daily walking ( 3 ).

Many people enjoy walking as a recreation in the mainly urban modern world, and it is one of the best forms of exercise.

For some, walking is a way to enjoy nature and the outdoors; and for others, the physical, sporting, and endurance aspect is more important.

There are a variety of different kinds of walking, including bushwalking, racewalking, beach walking, hillwalking, volksmarching, Nordic walking, trekking, dog walking, and hiking.

Some people prefer to walk indoors on a treadmill, or in a gym, and fitness walkers and others may use a pedometer to count their steps.

Hiking is the usual word used in Canada, the United States, and South Africa for long vigorous walks; similar walks are called tramps in New Zealand, or hill walking, or just walking in Australia, the UK, and the Irish Republic.

Australians also bushwalk. In English-speaking parts of North America, the term walking is used for short walks, especially in towns and cities.

Snow shoeing is walking in snow; a slightly different gait is required compared with regular walking.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s fact sheet on the “Relationship of Walking to Mortality Among U.S. Adults with Diabetes” states that those with diabetes who walked for 2 or more hours a week lowered their mortality rate from all causes by 39 percent.

Women who took 4,500 steps to 7,500 steps a day seemed to have fewer premature deaths compared to those who only took 2,700 steps a day.

“Walking lengthened the life of people with diabetes regardless of age, sex, race, body mass index, length of time since diagnosis and presence of complications or functional limitations.

It has been suggested that there is a relationship between the speed of walking and health and that the best results are obtained with a speed of more than 2.5 mph (4 km/h)

Governments now recognize the benefits of walking for mental and physical health and are actively encouraging it.

This growing emphasis on walking has arisen because people walk less nowadays than previously.

In the UK, a Department of Transport report found that between 1995/97 and 2005 the average number of walk trips per person fell by 16%, from 292 to 245 per year.

Many professionals in local authorities and the NHS are employed to halt this decline by ensuring that the built environment allows people to walk and that there are walking opportunities available to them.

Professionals working to encourage walking come mainly from six sectors: health, transport, environment, schools, sport and recreation, and urban design.

Walking requires little in the way of equipment, it can be done more or less anywhere, and it’s less likely to stress the joints in the way that running can.

According to the World Health Organization. Sedentary lifestyles can be attributed to countless health problems, including increased risk of:

All-cause mortality
Cardiovascular diseases
Diabetes
Obesity
Colon cancer
High blood pressure
Osteoporosis
Lipid disorders
Depression
Anxiety

Walking requires little in the way of equipment, it can be done more or less anywhere, and it’s less likely to stress the joints in the way that running can.

According to a study, consuming more water speeds the rate of weight loss. In fact, increasing your water consumption by 1.5 liters per day can burn 17,400 calories in a year!

Just 30 minutes every day can increase cardiovascular fitness, strengthen bones, reduce excess body fat, and boost muscle power and endurance.

It can also reduce your risk of developing conditions such as heart disease, type 2 diabetes, osteoporosis, and some cancers.

Science shows that placing one foot in front of the other leads to some seriously impressive mental and physical benefits.

Why should we walk 10000 steps in a day?

The 10,000 steps-a-day concept was originally popularized in Japan and was not based on medical research.

But now, researchers are investigating whether it’s a useful goal.

So far, studies show that 10,000 steps per day isn’t a magic number, but it is a good indicator of how much activity a person is achieving in a day.

Walking more steps per day is also associated with being thinner.

A study of steps per day and weight, body mass index (BMI), and other indicators showed that people who logged more pedometer steps per day weighed less, on average, and had a lower BMI

The magic number “10,000” dates back to a marketing campaign conducted shortly before the start of the 1964 Tokyo Olympic Games.

A company began selling a pedometer called the Manpo-kei: “man” meaning 10,000, “po” meaning steps, and “kei” meaning meter.

It was hugely successful and the number seems to have stuck.

Setting and achieving a daily goal like 10,000 steps can be a great way to increase your activity level, create a healthy lifestyle, and improve your overall health.

You can add walking as a warm-up before a strength training workout, or it can be a workout by itself.

The US Department of Health and Human Services says that adults should aim for at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity exercise per week.

Doing so can help reduce your risk of
heart disease, obesity, diabetes, depression, and high blood pressure, according to the Mayo Clinic.

But that recommended amount of exercise doesn’t correlate to the 10,000 steps that most fitness tracker goals are set to.

USA Today reported that adults who apply that 150 minutes per week rule to their own lives usually walk around 7,500 steps per day.

Even Fitbit, a fitness tracking device known for counting steps, doesn’t necessarily recommend 10,000 as the be-all-end-all step number.

The benefits of walking 10,000 steps

  • Boost your energy.
  • Aid relaxation and clear your mind.
  • Provide a sense of achievement and satisfaction.
  • Improve confidence and mood.
  • Help manage your weight.
  • Promote healthier blood cholesterol and blood pressure.
  • Build stronger bones and muscles.
  • Reduce your risk of heart attack.

It is important to drink water before and after your walk (for long walks: during the walk). Staying hydrated helps to keep you feeling great and increases the be positive effects of your walking.

Conclusion:

Now it’s time to discuss if you should do this. And if I am being honest, you should.

Having the goal of 10,000 steps in mind is a good motivational tool that can help you focus your efforts throughout the day.

A recent study found more steps are achieved if people have the goal of 10,000 steps in mind, rather than thinking about it as a 30-minute walk.

Simple walking makes you happy.

Walking may be the simplest way to work out.

Walking is an ideal type of exercise when you’re just getting started. You can go as fast or as slow as you need. It’s easy to bump up your pace and go longer distances as you get better.

You can walk around your neighborhood, on a school track, or through a nature trail. If the weather is bad, try walking in a mall.

Yes. You can walk anywhere. If you have a treadmill, you can even walk indoors

Physical activity doesn’t need to be complicated. Something as simple as a daily brisk walk can help you live a healthier life.

Regular brisk walking can help you:

Maintain a healthy weight
Prevent or manage various conditions, including heart disease, high blood pressure, and type 2 diabetes
Strengthen your bones and muscles
Improve your mood
Improve your balance and coordination.

Starting a walking program takes initiative. Sticking with it takes commitment. To stay motivated:

Set yourself up for success. Start with a simple goal, such as, “I’ll take a 5- or 10-minute walk during my lunch break.” When your 5- or 10-minute walk becomes a habit, set a new goal, such as, “I’ll walk for 20 minutes after work.”

Find specific times for walks. Soon you could be reaching for goals that once seemed impossible.

Make walking enjoyable. If you don’t like walking alone, ask a friend or neighbor to join you.

If you’re energized by groups, join a health club or walking group. You might like listening to music while you walk.
Vary your routine.

If you walk outdoors, plan several different routes for variety. If you’re walking alone, tell someone which route you’re taking.

Walk-in safe, well-lit locations.
Take missed days in stride.

If you find yourself skipping your daily walks, don’t give up. Remind yourself how good you feel when you include physical activity in your daily routine, and then get back on track.

Once you take that first step, you’re on the way to an important destination — better health.

Walking can help protect you during cold and flu season. A study of over 1,000 men and women found that those who walked at least 20 minutes a day, at least 5 days a week, had 43% fewer sick days than those who exercised once a week or less. And if they did get sick, it was for a shorter duration, and their symptoms were milder.

Psychologists found that a 10-minute walk may be just as good as a 45-minute workout when it comes to relieving the symptoms of anxiety.

You carry your body weight when you walk.

This is known as weight-bearing exercise. Some of the benefits include:
increased cardiovascular and pulmonary (heart and lung) fitness
reduced risk of heart disease and stroke
improved management of conditions such as hypertension (high blood pressure), high cholesterol, joint, and muscular pain or stiffness, and diabetes
stronger bones and improved balance
increased muscle strength and endurance
reduced body fat.

Drink plenty of fluids before and after your walk. If you are taking a long walk, take water with you.

Best of luck to everyone to stay fit and healthy.

The story is set in heartland Haryana, and that gives him a passable scope to talk patriarchy without getting too heavy about it.

Some of the best moments are the ones featuring Satish Kaushik & Saurabh Shukla. They are heartwarming and endearing. It’s a mood-lifter for sure! Rajkummar & Saurabh Shukla’s duo does wonders to the film. Don’t plan to watch it, watch it when you don’t have any plans!

The good things about movie gives message of importance of sports in child’s life. Games and sports teach students to co-operate with another and achieve success in life. Women empowerment, the true spirit of teacher who believes in his students. Parents should support their kids who are in sports as studying is important but sports as well. Inspiring dialogue from the movie is Teacher ka kaam hai sikhana … 90 laane wale ko 100 tak toh koi bhi le jaa sakta hai … 10 waale ko 40 tak le jaao toh baat hai. ( A teacher’s job is to teach … anyone can take a student who gets 90% to 100% … but if you can take a student who gets 10% to 40%, then that’s some achievement. ) Overall an average movie to watch.

Soorarai Pottru Review: One word inspiring.

Air Deccan founder GR Gopinath took to Twitter to shower praises on Suriya’s recently-released film, Soorarai Pottru. The film, directed by Sudha Kongara Prasad, is receiving rave reviews from the audience and critics.

Soorarai Pottru translates to ‘praise the brave’, It opens with an Air Deccan flight — the story is loosely based on the life of Captain G R Gopinath, who pioneered India’s low cost airlines with Air Deccan), making an emergency landing at an Indian Air Force base instead of the Chennai airport.

Nedumaaran is a former air force captain who wants to start an airline company that’s affordable to all at a very low price.

He derives his inspiration from Paresh Goswami the owner of Jaz airlines, who started his career as a middle-class man and then rose to great heights through his hard-work in the airline business.

Nedumaaran meets Sundari through an alliance proposal and proposes to her but she initially rejects him as he has vested interests only in flights and airlines which arouses doubts in her mind if he could be the “husband stuff”.

Moreover, she feels that her bakery business might get affected by this relationship. However, when they meet a few years later, Nedumaaran manages to convince her and they both agree to support each other’s interests and finally get married.

In the meantime, Nedumaaran and his friends plan schemes to start their business and with great difficulty manage to get an appointment with Paresh. However, Nedumaaran gets disappointed after knowing the negative vested interests of Paresh that would hinder his growth as he considers Nedumaaran his rival.

After facing stiff competition from other airline rivals including that of Paresh and after challenging all the hurdles set by them, Nedumaaran and his team of former air force captains finally manage to pull over the tide and launch their airline company- ‘Deccan air’.

They are being helped in this endeavor by their village people, their family members, and by certain like-minded good businessmen who are dedicated to doing service for the society.

Over-the-top media service

In a move that will have a far-reaching impact, the Union government has brought #OTT platforms, or video streaming service providers such as #Netflix, #AmazonPrime, #Hotstar, and others, under the ambit of the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting.

The government issued a notification that brings OTT platforms and online platforms publishing news under the I&B Ministry.

The notification that was issued on Monday by the cabinet secretariat informs about the new amendment signed by the President of India Ram Nath Kovind. The new law is an amendment to the Government of India (Allocation of Business) Rules 1961 on November 9. The order categorically states:

In the Government of India (Allocation of Business) Rules, 1961, in THE SECOND SCHEDULE, under the heading “MINISTRY OF INFORMATION AND BROADCASTING (SOOCHANA AUR PRASARAN MANTRALAYA)” after entry 22, the following sub-heading and entries shall be inserted, namely:-
“VA. DIGITAL/ONLINE MEDIA
22A. Films and Audio-Visual programmes made available by online content providers.
22B. News and current affairs content on online platforms.”.

Until this amendment, no government body regulated the content of digital media platforms, and this is something that the Information and Broadcasting Minister, Prakash Javdekar, has said was required to keep a tab on content, just like other countries such as China and Singapore have done.

Other forms of content are regulated by bodies such as the Press Council of India, the News Broadcasters Association, the Advertising Standards Council of India, and the Central Board of Film Certification.

At present, the Press Council of India regulates the print media, the News Broadcasters Association (NBA) represents the news channels, the Advertising Standards Council of India regulates advertising, while the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) monitors films.

Mr. Javadekar did not speak on the issue or explain the implications of such an order. The Ministry has also remained tight-lipped on exactly what is in store for digital news media and OTT platforms. An official from one of the leading OTT platforms said that it was too early to comment since there was no clarity from the government on what this notification would finally lead to.

Founding editor of news portal The Wire, M. K. Venu, said the government had been giving enough hints from time to time that it wanted to regulate digital media but the exact nature of the regulation it wanted to bring was not clear. “There is no clarity on what they mean by digital media. The government talks about digital media and digital aggregators in the same breath but they are different things. Are they looking at licensing, are they looking at entry barriers, or are they looking at curbing digital media? We still don’t know,” Mr. Venu said.

Delhi Air Quality

Delhi: Air Quality Index is at 362 in Sonia Vihar, 345 in Bawana, 326 in #Patparganj and 373 in #Jahangirpuri; all four in the ‘very poor’ category, as per Central Pollution Control Board.

Thick smog envelops India’s capital New Delhi as its air quality plummets, and residents say they feel suffocated.

The city’s location and weather patterns see it choked by smog every winter.

No relief to Delhiites from poisonous air as capital turns into gas chamber

Stay safe Delhites.

Arresting #ArnabGoswami

Arresting #ArnabGoswami is despicable.

The Maharashtra, government has no respect for rule of law & constitutional freedoms. This reminds us of the dark days of emergency!

This is a black day for India’s democracy. This is a black day for India’s free speech. We don’t need the pseudos of the world.

Arnab Goswami, who was seen being pushed into the police van, claimed that he was assaulted by police at his home while being taken away.

“They beat my son,” says Arnab Goswami from the police van on shameful assault & arrest.

Isn’t this an emergency-like situation in Mumbai?

Why is the state selectively behind only those that aren’t dancing to the tunes of the government, but are simply impartially reporting facts?

The arrest of Arnab Goswami proves that the ruling Political party can use Police to arrest anyone they wish to arrest.

Dissent allows expression in spite of the differences we may have with someone, but political persecution of free press is strongly condemnable.

Those who are exercising tacit silence are secretly turning into cheerleaders of an autocracy.

We stand with You #ArnabGoswami
